Longshot wins straw poll

The results are in from today's Texas GOP straw poll:

Duncan Hunter: 534
Fred Thompson: 266
Ron Paul: 217
Mike Huckabee: 83
Rudy Giuliani: 78
Mitt Romney: 61
Ray McKinney: 28
John Cox: 10
John McCain: 8
Sam Brownback: 6
Tom Tancredo: 6
Hugh Cort: 3

These results indicate why the straw poll was never a good idea. Duncan Hunter? Longshot is probably a little too kind for the former Pat Buchanan supporter.

Yeah, I could've gone and voted. But why?

Brian,

Umm, no, that's not the story today.

The story TODAY, in TEXAS, Ron Paul's home state, is that Ron Paul finished third.

The story TODAY, in TEXAS, is that a local son fringe candidate finished third behind a non-local son, but equally fringe, candidate.

Oh, and that local son fringe candidate also finished behind a guy who hasn't even announced yet.

Of course, it's kind of silly anyway. Most Republicans in Texas have better things to do over a Labor Day weekend than to obsess over fringe nitwits. There's a LOT of football to be watched!

Since you linked to an Okie site, though -- I'm pretty sure the story in Oklahoma today is the Sooners' dominance in their home opener so far. 49-0 so far in the second quarter. Wow! Much more exciting than Ron Paul to Okies, trust me.

My percentages were right, but totals wrong above. Corrected below. Ron Paul is winning the sum of the last 11 polls. The rules imposed by the Texas GOP seem to be be rigged to exclude the majority of Paul supporters. Other states did not do that. So in these circumstances his showing was pretty good.

Paul First, Hunter 4th overall in 11 straw polls since Iowa
Rank Candidate.........%........ Votes
1…Ron Paul……………24.9%……….999
2…Fred Thompson….18.9%……….759
3…Mitt Romney……….16.0%……….644
4…Duncan Hunter……….14.1%……….568
5…Rudy Giuliani……….8.1%……….325
6…Mike Huckabey……….5.3%……….214
7…Sam Brownback……….4.4%……….175
8…John McCain……….3.0%……….119
9…Tommy Tancredo……….0.5%……….22
…..Other…………………………4.2%……..167
….Total…….100%……3992
