"Rumbles"

Selby buries this in a historical piece:

RUMBLES: State Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, has been urged by Roger Staubach to run for the U.S. Senate if Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison tries for governor in 2010. And add Secretary of State Roger Williams to possible Senate hopefuls. "Certainly," Williams said. "I'm an athlete. I have my track shoes with me all the time."

Seems to me like Shapiro would have a tough time getting through a statewide primary. Staubach, on the other hand, would have a much better chance.

Meanwhile, Roger Williams is waiting in line, as are quite a few other people.

I doubt a State Senator would win the republican primary if a senate seat opened up.

The Texas Republican bench has too many players for a State Senator to get a starting position in the big leagues. Roger Williams, Attorney General Abbott, Susan Combs, not to mention Dewhurst if he decides not to run against Hutchison.

In addition we have a bunch of Congressmen who want to enjoy the powers of the Senate now that they are in the minority. I could see Pete Sessions, Michael McCaul, and Jeb Hensarling all looking at a senate opening.

Out of all those names I like Jeb Hensarling. He would join Tom Coburn in the Senate in standing up to wasteful spending and enacting meaningful oversight. The Club For Growth would probaly get behind him too.
