Craddick wants sine die

Harvey Kronberg reports that Speaker Craddick suggests sine die adjournment for the House.

That would mean that school finance reform is dead.

Question: does Perry's repeated call for special sessions on school finance help him or hurt him now that we know that they failed?

Special calls aren't going to help Gov. Perry until there is the will to pass a real school spending reduction/property tax reduction plan at the Capitol.

The problem is that the R's have let the debate be framed mainly in terms of revenue and school spending is only mentioned in passing. In other words, they have been rolled by the public ed regime because of a lack of courage in Austin.

The Texas Federation of Teachers and the Texas Association of School Administrators are not tea and crumpets professional societies. They are brass knuckled political operators and must be stood up to by resolute men and women. The legislature needs more conservatives, of course, but also people who know how to fight hard and ruthlessly wage political warfare.

Until the leadership redefines the debate in terms of skyrocketing school spending, the unity and courage will not exist among the rank and file Republicans. Thus, until this happens, another special call will not to any good.
